For years, experts have urged people with a family history of type 2 diabetes to maintain a healthy weight and activity level. Being overweight and inactive were thought to be the main reasons why people developed this type of diabetes. But we now see that some people will still develop type 2 diabetes even if they are not overweight.

Some Things In Life Are Free

Robin thinks her diabetes meal plan is boring. She follows it each day because it helps her control her diabetes, but she isn’t happy. She would like to have more food choices and snacks she can nibble on that are tasty and fun.

Do you ever feel this way? You don’t have to. Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean you must stop eating all of the foods you love. A diabetes meal plan can be very flexible. Visit your dietitian and let him or her update your meal plan so you can eat more of the foods you enjoy and still improve your diabetes control. You may have to eat smaller amounts of those items and eat them less often, but you should be able to find a way to have them.

When you open a new puzzle box from the store, you see a mix of colored pieces that don’t appear to fit together. But, with time and patience, you can arrange those pieces into a lovely picture. Like a puzzle, our bodies need a mix of foods that don’t always seem to fit together: calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat. Let’s examine the four puzzle pieces our bodies need each day.

Cutting Back On Sugar

The American Heart Association (AHA) has a very important message for all Americans: Eat less added sugar. Sugar added to different products gives us extra, unnecessary calories that don’t offer any real nutritional value. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. Obesity is linked to many health problems, including heart attacks, strokes and certain forms of cancer.

A diabetes meal plan is made up of healthy foods in portion sizes that are measured to meet your special needs. Unlike a quick weight loss diet that may last only a few weeks or months, most people with diabetes hope to eat healthy for the rest of their lives. To do that, many stop going out to eat. They fear they will be tempted by the items on the menu or at the buffets and make the wrong food choices. Fish: Good For Your Heart and Mind

Update Your Story

If you have a hard time reaching your current health goals, don’t worry. Success can be as easy as changing the story you tell yourself each day. Take Frank, for example. Every day, Frank told himself the same story: “I can’t stick to anything. I’m hopeless. I don’t exercise, I don't follow my diet, I don’t always take my pills, and often forget to check my blood glucose. My health team should stop helping me. They should save their advice for someone who is able to do what they say.”

Snack Attack

When you were young, did your mother tell you not to eat between meals? Many people still think snacking is a no-no. They worry that the snacks they eat will cause them to gain weight and become less healthy. But experts who reviewed the eating habits of more than 11,000 people found that many of the snackers were very healthy eaters. They tended to drink more milk, eat more fruit and whole grains and consume less sodium in general. And the biggest surprise of all? The more they snacked, the better they ate overall.

Mark Heyman, PhD, CDE is a clinical health psychologist and the director of the Center for Diabetes and Mental Health (CDMH). Dr. Beverly S. Adler, PhD, CDE (aka “Dr. Bev”) is a clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator, author and speaker. She specializes treating the emotional issues of people with diabetes. In her private practice, she provides individual, family and/or group therapy utilizing a cognitive behavior therapy orientation, combined with a spiritual approach. Her goal is to empower her patients to manage their diabetes.

Dr. Bev is the author of two self-help diabetes books. She has written numerous articles which are published in print and online – always focused on diabetes from the emotional perspective. Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, FAND is an internationally recognized nutrition and diabetes expert with more than two decades experience. She has worked as both a nutrition counselor and a diabetes educator in the hospital and research settings, and now in private practice in Newport News, VA. Marlene Koch (pronounced ‘cook’) is a nationally recognized nutritionist, popular TV personality and New York Times bestselling author. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from UCLA with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Science. She is a registered dietitian and one of a select group of dietitians to hold an advanced certificate in Child and Adolescent Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.

Jackie Newgent, RDN, CDN, is a registered dietitian nutritionist and classically-trained chef.
