Blood Glucose Monitoring Basics

If you have diabetes, one of the most important things you can do to help manage your own health is to monitor your blood glucose regularly. This helps keep track of your A1C, and also helps prevent or treat complications from your diabetes. Your blood glucose reading tells you the amount of sugar in your blood at that time, and helps you decide if you need to make any changes to your medication, diet plan or physical activity routine. It also helps you understand how various factors, such as stress, illness or other conditions, affect blood glucose levels.
Checking blood glucose used to mean a visit to a laboratory to draw a sample of your blood. But now it is easy to check blood glucose anytime using a portable device called a blood glucose meter.
